The 18-105 would be a good choice, but the much less expensive 55-210 is surprisingly nice too.

This would depend on what the OP needs in terms of FL and low light.

Far shots outside - 55-210

Shorter flexible lens good for the inside (some occasions at least) - 18-105/4

f4 is slow on the inside, but f6.3 (at 105mm) is just completely useless without a flash.

OTOH, 210 mm is not that long and 105mm is not long at all, it's more of an extended reach than true tele.

Even 100mm is a bit long for indoors.  *shrug*

I'd go with 18-105 as the perfect walkaround & buy an inexpensive manual tele lens to use off the tripod if I really felt like I need one.

I bought a 135mm, but I never use it because:

  1. It's soft at f2.8.  Needs to be stopped down to f4, but then, I could use another lens that starts at f4 or f4.5.....
  2. I just don't often feel a need for that focal length.  I usually want much wider, and for portraits, I have to stand back quite a ways -- I might as well use the 55-210.

Maybe I should try a different one, but so far, I'm not feelin' it.
