Why declare it dead and thus create a self fulfilling prophesy? Better to say nothing surely and let it do whatever it will do. Certainly while the 7D is still selling.

Actually, if it is dead, it would be in Canon's interest to say so; that would spur those 7D owners hoping for a MkII to make the move to something else, bit 70D, 5DIII, or 1DX, which would provide an almost immediate boost in sales (which, based on their recent performance, they could certainly use!). By not saying anything, those current owners are just sitting on their upgrade cash.

Well that's one possibility. For me it would just make me hang onto my 7D a little longer and wait for the 80D (the 70D doesn't feel like a significant enough upgrade in sensor right now). The other possibility though is that some people (if the threads around this forum are anything to go on) will just jump ship and start posting about how Canon haven't innovated recently and have abandoned the crop sensor market...not like we haven't seen a bunch of those already .

It raises the question that if the 7D is "dead", is there less likelihood of there being an 80D in the near future.

Wasn't there a recent interview with a senior person from canon who basically just said "yes a 7DII is in the works but we won't release something till we really have something special and new to offer"?

How on earth can a 7DII be "in the works" and not be "released" until Canon really have "something special and new" to offer?  They either have something special and new and should release the damn camera now, or they don't have anything special and new - and after nearly five years, why the hell not!  A statement like that from Canon doesn't inspire any confidence.

Also, the longer they leave it to update the 7D, the more that expectations about the camera's ability will increase and the more disappointed potential buyers will be if the 7DII doesn't meet those expectations.
