I think that the success of the 5D3 and 6D has claimed some of the potential 7D2 customers, and the 70D with its new focus system has claimed other video-wise customers. The 7D2 needs to be a significant upgrade over the 70D to make reasonable sales.

It has to not crush 5dIII /1dx sales.

It has to not crush 5DIV sales and 1D XI sales.  Those two have had a good run and are up for replacement soon.  The 5DIII hit in March 2012 with a 22MP sensor up from 21, and the 7D introduced a new 18MP sensor at the end of 2009.  Thre 3MP is just about nothing, so the different was really the pixel size.  The 7D had a better AF system, better video, better frame rate, and it still took over 2 years for the 5DII update.  The 1D X and 7D have the same number of pixels but the image quality is not nearly on the same level, not to mention performance and features.  I think these segments are separate enough that a great 7DII for two grand would create so much sales that any minor loss in a mature body would be insignifcant....and leave the way open for those FF upgrades to convince some converts to dump the 7DII.

Let's face it, the 5dIII only trails behind the 1dx based upon build quality, fps and a bit more processing power.

But the 1D X target audience is very, very specialized and very, very demanding.

A body with ruggedness of 7d, 5dIII focus system and 10-12fps for $2,000 and Canon suddenly has a very tough time selling $6400 1dx bodies - unless, of course, the sensor they use continues Canon's last generation trend of poor performance vs. Sony sensor competition.

How many years did it take Sony to catch up with the 7D 18MP sensor????  Yeah, more than a couple.

If dynamic range and high iso performance is on par and you get durability at least 7d level and 10fps and 5diii focus system?  Great camera, but way too damaging to upper end sales IMO.

Upper end sales are at a level now that a huge spike in 7DII sales (as compared to the slow trickle of 7D sales) would be huge.  Then, when that slows a bit over the next year or two, the FF cameras will update, steal some 7DII users, get all the pros and advanced amateurs, and Canon will laugh all the way to the bank.
