DPI vs PPI

Guys, I am getting ready to put an advertisement in a magazine and apart from the sales guy being a total d**k and wasting time meaning that the ad will be delayed, I'm not sure he really has a clue. HOWEVER, I'm always ready to admit I could be wrong which is why I'm here.

I exported my graphics through Corel Draw at 300 dpi and he comes back and asks for higher resolution, at least 300 dpi.

So, I looked the pics up in ACDSee and it says 300 ppi. Is this the same thing and if I export them to say 600 or whatever, will that do the job?
They are only going to be around 1" square in the actual ad (yes, very small, I know...) and I exported them at 300dpi in 1000 pixel size.

Am I doing something wrong here and whether I am or not, what should I export the stuff at?

Thanks

George
