It does take a bit of getting used to - and I will admit that I do prefer manually zooming a lens. What I have learned is instead of what you say above (in and out, ad infinitum) is just try to get a close to the framing I want as possible - assuming I don't want either the longest or widest end - and take the shot. I can always adjust in cropping afterwards if I was off a bit.
