I will have to experiment with IS turned off.

I turn IS off whenever I'm shooting moving targets. However it can be a big help when shooting stationary subjects. Just have to give the IS enough time to stabilize. It's not as fast as the AF.

I am also thinking of getting the Canon battery Grip. I had one on my old Canon XT and I think it helped me hold the camera more steady.

I really like the "Neewer" grip I have for the 70D (was recommended by another poster).

I have a "Photive" grip for my 650D, but I had to tweak the contacts deep inside the grip to prevent the occasional loss of power. Works great now.

I just order a "Neewer" grip for T5i, I hope it works well, I only paid $21.95 at Amazon, plus shipping. The Canon, OEM version was $119. I had a grip on my old XT and I loved it. I think the grip should make a big difference on my vertical shots. Below is are a few shots I took yesterday in park and I think the focus was sharp.
