You think there is a market there for a fast, compact zoom kit lense with good optical properties?

I think this gets to the heart of it. Economies of scale are difficult to make work when the vast majority of people are happy with "good enough."

I know a lot of people with DSLRs and good mirrorless camera. Very few of them could tell you what a "fast zoom" is, or even explain aperture.
