I have to disagree with this at so may levels. Wanting a camera that gives detail at 100% could be construed as an obsession with photography rather than a passion for photography. Also to say all 1/2.3" sensors produce mush at 100% just does not match my experience. Certainly a 12mp 1/1.7" does not.

I agree with you, 12mp is the max you can cram into a 1/1.7" sensor, that is why I just got traded my G12 for a XZ-2. Since I shoot >90% at base to ISO 800, the XZ-2 just seemed to be the best camera with the least amount of compromises for me at this time. As you can see from the comparison chart , it does very well against its competition, even the G1X! Even against it own peers , it out classes them all. I'm still not completely satisfied with it, but it is the best 1/1.7" sensor fixed lens camera at this time with the controls, options that I require. I strongly believe that there will be a few 1" high efficiency sensor cameras produced in the next 1-2 years. At that time, I will upgrade to the one that stands out and has the features and handling I require.

You say very small prints yet I can get A4 prints out of small sensors without any problem.

Nobody gets these cameras for 100% detail which is more a technical test than relevance to real life. This is the whole point of these superzooms which do not need blowing up.

Only if you want or need to print with very high clarity and sharpness at A4 or above.

I took a few good pictures many years ago with my trusty old Sony DHC-5H of the Miami zoo which came out OK, IMHO. But it only had 7.2 MP and a very good 12x zoom lens. Now, they have crammed way too many MP in the sensors and have way too much zoom with lessor quality lenses, to make them so cheap.

The images of the Miami Zoo were OK when viewing on the Internet on a computer monitor. I would not have tried to print any of them at A4 size or above. Also, the DR in some of the animals in the shade was terrible. Blown up to 100%, none had very fine detail but most looked OK at up to about 1-2MP's, max. To me, 8MP's are max for 1/2.3" sensors and 12MP is max for 1/1.7" sensors.

Until or unless technology changes for the better, these are the hard cold facts regarding IQ, sharpness and DR when it comes to sensor size, at least for now. You only get what you pay for and you can't change the rules of physics, no mater how you may try to rationalize it. The bottom line is that 'facts are facts' and they sometimes different from some peoples opinions
