A6000 lenses: advice needed for trip

I've gotten a grant for a trip this summer, and I will want and need to document it. I will not be "up close" to some of the things I will be shooting yet will also need to do some detail shots. I have ordered the a6000 with the kit lens. Lots of time to change my mind evidently. However, after reading the reviews here, I would like some help.

Portability is a big consideration, and one of the reasons I ordered the kit lens is size.

So: Would I be better off with one of the less expensive fixed prime lenses and relying on cropping later to get the details? (I don't have the budget for expensive lenses at this time.)

I see the 20F28 looks small and light at about $350 new on Amazon. The 35F18 is about $100 more but larger...
