Curves are just another tool within the 'lightroom' PP, I do not see as obsolete, one is surely working with the tonal range and contrast with whatever tool one uses, that includes curves or whatever user interface tool one uses to make it more user friendly, surely?

Just different user interface tools.

The sliders are just a user interface way of adjusting, surely?

Absolutely. Kelby's point, which which I happen to agree, is that anyone who's learning Photoshop now need not bother learning curves. It's very complicated to grasp, and there are much simpler ways of doing the same thing. But those who already know how to use tools can keep on using it. (Although I suspect, and I suspect Kelby would say, that even people who know how to use Curves would do better to perfect their use of the sliders instead, because they are much easier and will save you time.)
