Elusive little birds

For weeks now I've been trying to photograph some Splendid Wrens; I see them but they hide in the brush and only keep still for 2ms. The female is quite drab but the male is worthy of its name. Today looked like another day when everything with feathers was going to be too shy,

The female sat still for one second then disappeared.

A Golden Whistler came to see who was invading his territory before he too flitted away.

I then looked behind me to see a flock of Double-barred Finches to save the day.

These tiny birds (about 50mm long) are very curious and fearless.

As you can see light was a problem for the longer zoom shots, I really don't like anything above ISO400 on the HS50 but you can't always use ISO100 and get a decent shutter speed. The HS50 also had the occasional focus dummy spit - nothing would induce it to focus on the intended subject here:

But there were also the wayside flowers.

Morning Glory

Don't stand still for too long around here.
