Set the camera to a certain distance where you want the athlete to be in your picture..

start to shoot a fast burst an incident before it reaches that distance and keep your finger on

the shutter button until shortly after that distance.......

select the correct picture afterwards......

so simple without af !

I call it burst focus....or spray focus

done it this way since 1975 !
