I also need a one lens solution for travel, maybe two.

I was thinking about the 28-300 and the new 18-35.

I do enlarge to 24x36 often, have you printed anything larger than 13x19 print with the 28-300.

I have the 2.8 trinity lenses with a D800, I know that they are superior but I don't want to lug them around if I don't have to. I need to keep it light and accessible.

Never printed larger then 13 x 19 using D800 / 28-300 so sorry cant help with that. All I can say is if your looking for flexibility the 28-300 is hard to beat.  The only real decision you have to make is does the IQ meet your needs?  Obviously I cant answer that but as a vacation lens it certainly meets mine.

all the best,
