I turn IS off whenever I'm shooting moving targets.  However it can be a big help when shooting stationary subjects.  Just have to give the IS enough time to stabilize.  It's not as fast as the AF.

I am also thinking of getting the Canon battery Grip. I had one on my old Canon XT and I think it helped me hold the camera more steady.

I really like the "Neewer" grip I have for the 70D (was recommended by another poster).

I have a "Photive" grip for my 650D, but I had to tweak the contacts deep inside the grip to prevent the occasional loss of power.  Works great now.
