Outfitting for a trip to Africa for nature photography

Hi all - I'm fairly new to nature photography and am loving it! I took a trip to Africa a couple years ago and brought my Nikon D7000 and a couple of lenses, the longest being a Nikor 70-300 VR. Last year I purchased a used Nikor 200-400 VR but now realize my tripod isn't stable enough to do the lens justice. I had the change to use a friend's tripod with a Gimbal head, and it was great.

I am planning another trip to Africa (for nature photos) and need to be thoughtful about weight. Here are my questions (finally, I know...):

1. Should I bother bringing my new (heavy) 200-400 lens?

2. If yes to #1, is a tripod a necessity, or would a mono-pod or something else be more ideal?

3. Does anyone have a great suggestion for a new camera bag that would travel well and be efficient for taking into the back country (on foot)?

4. Any other suggestions?

Thank you!!
