For a beginner: Olympus E-M10 or Sony A6000?

Hi All,

I have a friend who is looking to upgrade to a 'real' camera. Originally he was just going to walk into a shop and pick up a dSLR (and I assume walk out with a Nikon or Canon), but I think as a friend I ought to steer him towards a mirrorless camera. I honestly believe he'll use it more (due to reduced bulk/weight), it'll be easier to get to grips with (default live-view on LCD), and better suit his requirements (he mentioned an interest in good video).

Looking at his budget, I identified two that would fit (both incl kit lenses):

  • Olympus OM-D E-M10 (S$1250) using m43.
  • Sony A6000 (S$1050) using e-mount.

I'll post this in both forums, as I'm really looking for a balanced view (hoping this thread doesn't get hijacked by any fanboys), but could anyone with experience in both systems (m43 and e-mount) suggest which would be better fit for a semi-beginner? And why.

My experience is slightly biased as I've only been using Sony the last 18 months, so I'll refer to this thread when I see him for hopefully a more balanced view.

Thanks all!
