16-70 Zeiss QC?

After doing lots of Googling and reading tests and reviews, comparing images to 18-55 kit (that I own) I came to a conclusion:

1. 16-70 is a better IQ zoom than 18-55, specifically corners and edges are sharper compared to 18-55.

2. 16-70 has more contrast, giving richer colors on same shots compared side by side, even when both lenses are stopped down 16-70 still maintains a little extra color punch or higher contrast.

3. It is a good size lens for APS-C considering its range from 16 to 70 - it's just 15mm longer and 5mm wider than 18-55 - which is not bad at all.

Now Cons:

1. It is expensive. Would be easier to justify the price if QC was not an issue and user was guaranteed excellent Zeiss quality with every 16-70 lens.

2. It's a bit of a lottery in QC. I came to a conclusion that first batches were most problematic and there is a hope that next batch (or current) will have better QC. However, no one can guarantee that. I wish I could go through 10-12 copies of 16-70 to find a good one, but I think most users don't have that opportunity as well. Usually, bad QC is evident by soft edge/corners either left or right side (decentering) at around 24-35mm, sometimes at 60-70mm as well. YMMV.

All in all, I think this zoom should be a kit zoom for new cameras like a6000 or should be offered as a bundle at least. However, as a stand alone lens it is a little expensive for that poor QC as it is right now. Hopefully, Sony is improving QC.
