Re: Why is it so big!?

Here is my Tamron (adaptall) 80-210/3.8-4 and NEX6 (with E55-210):

As you can notice, the Tamron 80-210/3.8-4 isn't much bigger than E55-210 zoom! But much more light strength...

I wonder whether it would not 70-200/f4 could have been a bit smaller...

The Tamron mounted on the NEX would lool very similar to FE70-200. It won't be as thick. (70-200 uses 72mm filter while the Tamron 58mm) but most of it also comes from AF motor, stabilization, additional controls on the lens (focus hold buttons, focus range switch, Dual Mode OSS switch). Then there is modern optics where expectstions of a lens wide open are higher than those older lenses where you are likely to stop down 1-2 stops for good results.

The fact is, E-mount bodies make any lens look bigger because the body itself is very slim. In fact, this includes even the tiny 18-55 kit lens.

Yep, this is why I made that "side note" correction:

Anyway, I'm surprised how good my old Tamron 80-210/3.8-4 is even with SPEEDBOOSTER (FF-equal.)

It's not that "soft" even wide open - at least with speedbooster (+NEX6), very compact and nice setup to handle. Couple of my samples with NEX6+speedbooster+Tamron 80-210 adaptall (wide open!):

I haven't tried SB on any of my Minolta 70-210 lenses yet but should. I have the beercan version, which is constant f/4 and its replacement (f/3.5-4.5). The beercan is what had me wish for a new version from Sony (although I was thinking A-mount). It will be an effective 50-150/2.8 lens via SB.

On the subject of size, the 70-210/3.5-4.5 is significantly smaller than the legendary original, 70-210/4 in both length (nearly half) and thickness. Considerably lighter too (but that is mostly attributable to cheaper build of the newer version).

I prefer the original though... but keeping the 70-210/3.5-4.5 to try as a compact tele on NEX-6 sometime.
