Here is my Tamron (adaptall) 80-210/3.8-4 and NEX6 (with E55-210):

As you can notice, the Tamron 80-210/3.8-4 isn't much bigger than E55-210 zoom! But much more light strength...

I wonder whether it would not 70-200/f4 could have been a bit smaller...


The Tamron mounted on the NEX would lool very similar to FE70-200. It won't be as thick. (70-200 uses 72mm filter while the Tamron 58mm) but most of it also comes from AF motor, stabilization, additional controls on the lens (focus hold buttons, focus range switch, Dual Mode OSS switch). Then there is modern optics where expectstions of a lens wide open are higher than those older lenses where you are likely to stop down 1-2 stops for good results.

The fact is, E-mount bodies make any lens look bigger because the body itself is very slim. In fact, this includes even the tiny 18-55 kit lens.
