Great all-rounder with focusing issues
4
I like the camera as it is except for several issues:
The standard grip is not designed for the weight of the camera. Since the camera is heavier than most compacts, I unintentionally press camera controls and it is somewhat annoying. The optional grip is way too expensive. So I'd rather keep nagging around than buy this grip. I don't want to invest my money in this Canon's carefully designed marketing rip-off (larger grip should cost some 5 cent more in production).
The other issue that bothers me is focusing. It is very hard to focus in macro mode with this camera. Even in macro mode it keeps locking on distant objects. I consider this a bug that MUST be addressed in further firmware updates. The camera in macro mode should not prefer distant subjects.
In normal mode "Touch shutter" is also not stellar as it sometimes misses the focus as well. Tough thanks to shallow DOF you can recognize the problem on the camera display in most cases.
If you decide on using a pol filter with the Canon adapter - be careful, you may be unable to separate the filter form the adapter later (at least the sales person used all his tools and he could not do it). The reason as I've figured out is the adapters' material, which is plastic. The adapter ring deforms if you try to unscrew it while holding it from two sides. There is a way to unscrew it though. If you keep the adapter on the lens while unscrewing the filter, the lens barrel serves as a scaffold and prevents the deformation of the adapter. So unscrew the filter while the adapter is still attached to the camera.
What I like is a great and useful zoom range, nice object tracking, shallow DOF (as far as it gets for a compact camera). Despite these issues the camera is a big step from LX7 that I still own. Canon G1X Mark II also offers to my personal opinion more out of the box as compared to the "standard zoom package" offered by EVF manufacturers, but currently lacks tele- and wide angle converters.
