The increasing interest in lens performance, especially sharpness and the plethora of lens testing sites can have a perverse effect. It is possible that some lenses may be actually designed to "star" at typical lens testing distances; eg 40X focal length, so that they get eye catching "scores". This would be unfortunate and potentially mislead many.

I fear this as well. Lens designs focused on crushing test chart resolution tests and that seems to be 90% of a lens' score at most of these lenstip / DXO etc sites some (many?) people make their lens choices from. Sigma sure seemed to do it with this 50 and succeeded. The techy types feel pixel level sharpness is priority one, which I've learned for my photography is down the list a few spots.
