Carrying a camera with a sling strap--what they don't tell you

I actually don't mind my neck straps.  I hold my camera in one hand or the other and know it's not going to hit the ground.

An alternative, of course, is just to walk around with it in one hand with the strap wrapped around my wrist.  But I never do that.

Another is the sling type strap like a Blackrapid.  I've watched the videos on their site and have a good idea of how they work.  But what don't they tell you?  Like, how easy is it for the strap to slide off your shoulder?  How does your camera play being carried upside down hanging from its tripod mount (which I believe would only be engineered to be strong with the camera's weight going down, ya know, like on a tripod or maybe in portrait mode).

IOW, what are the upsides but especially downsides of using a sling strap?  I'm only talking one camera, not the ability to carry two.
