Would you find a "locked" metering mode feature useful?

Try these custom settings if your camera has them. Here's example for D800.

  • Easy exposure compensation (b4): on
  • Auto meter-off delay (c2): no limit
  • Assign AE-L/AF-L button (f6): AE lock (Hold)
  • Customize command dials (f9): Change main/sub ON A-mode
  • Turn ON Auto ISO sensitivity control: Press and hold ISO button, rotate front wheel to turn on/off Auto ISO. Or go to SHOOTING MENU, ISO Sensitivity Settings, to further set it up.

It works in A,S,P mode and Live View mode. In M mode, it only works with lens with aperture ring AND the ring is enabled: Customize command dials (f9): Aperture setting OFF (Aperture ring OK)

Once the meter is locked, it remains so. It can be turned off but it CAN NOT be altered. You turn it off by (1) Unlock it, (2) Switch camera off, (3) going to video mode.

Now you would have a camera which will:

Lock EV with AEL button. Change EV value with front wheel. Change exposure parameters with real wheel. Shoot at ISO 100 and let auto-iso bump it back and forth whenever light dims. Switch different modes in between, turn on bracket, time lapse, using flash, go to LV, ..., it works on all situations.

It's new wine in new bottle.

Thanks!  This is going into one of my custom settings banks.
