A few images below from my new SP100ee. The first being shot through wet glass window in very dull and wet conditions. All were shot in ISO auto and not good shooting weather so a varied selection of pictures taken today.

The red dot sight is fabulous and works a treat.

Taken 500 shots and lots of previewing and still on two bars so happy there.

Image quality ok if you don't expect too much. The reach is great and for my purpose ( mainly a bit of birding ). I'm happy and look forward to some better weather.

What no charger!! have to charge the battery in camera, so ordered a cheap charger from ebay.

My main interest in this camera is for birding but I have also added some close up and long distance pics too.

Kevin,

Great series of images from your new camera. Looks like a good choice for birding. Thanks for sharing.

I was upset for my pheasant picture this weekend ( can be seen in my Flickr ir dpr galery) , because it was hard to keep 40-150mm at the Tele end, handheld. And there were also lack of focusing and blurry images... I was thinking after all

"Small sensor would perform better." seems it can, but they are a little too soft. Can't see the ISO info on mobile version, however.

I guess best compromise would be Stylus 1 & Tcon-17x for the final image. Surely a tripod and/or remote shutter would make things change on positive side... But still.

Most of your images are pleasant, apart from softness issue.

Thanks to share

Ben

Nice shots for shooting through a wet window! Is the red dot sight hard to use?

Thanks

Early days yet, I'm sure it is a camera that will do much better in brighter conditions.

It took a little while to understand how the red dot works and how to adjust it, but now I have it set it is very accurate. I have had a fair bit of success with moving targets and can see that it works, but nothing worth posting yet. You have to keep an eye on focal length of your subject to make sure your image is framed ok. But it is really a neat idea that is useful for distant static objects too.

Looks likes the camera has adequakey fulfilled the purpose for which you bought it - birding. Nothing wrong with the image quality in any of these - and the high ISO usage has comes leaps and bounds ahead of Oly ultrazoom compacts from the mid 2000's.

Hey Kev,
I see in your gear list you have FZ200. Can you provide your opinion of which you prefer & possibly share a couple of comparison SOOC pics?

TIA!

Hi

My wife has been using the FZ200 for some time and she loves it. My preferred camera is Fuji X-S1.

To compare The FZ200 with the SP-100, I think that the FZ200 would be my preferred camera up to 600mm. Then of course the SP-100 takes over after that.

I'm not really into test shots to compare but I've tried to show a couple of pictures with similar settings and distance (around 25 ft ) that I would be happy with, and clearly shows the advantage of the extra zoom. Hope this is of use to you.

Hi

How's the new camera going.

I am looking forward to some more new photos, could you do a full zoom of the moon and some daylight photos. Does the focusing do well at full zoom and is it accurate and quick at focusing. Cheers Steve.

Hi Kevin, would like to see more shot and is AF fast and reliable, any help will be appreciated.

Hi Steve

Not used the camera much as been busy. Hope to get out soon. I did however take a shot of the moon for you.

The first one is straight out of the camera. The second is the same picture but cropped and sharpened in gimp. The camera had no problems focussing on the moon. I used manual mode. Hand held.

Thanks, quite a sharp shot. Cheers Steve

I like your moon shot straight Out Of the Camera.

But for me to consider it, I need to know about some issues -

What does the SP-100 so do when the battery runs out? SH-50 retracts the lens before shutting down. My last camera that died with the lens open was the C-750UZ released in 2003.

Is the zoom quiet in videos? My SH-50 is quiet, my 2-year-old SZ-30MR makes a whirring sound.

Is there custom WB? On the SH-50 the two custom WB settings work still after WB AUTO has given up.

In the SP-100EE I do like the red dot sight and the reach. But if it has ancient hardware and questionable firmware in it, I will be inclined to look at the SH-1 instead.

Hi KJ

AF is pretty good The red dot sight works really well and helps when at full zoom.

Managed to get this Goldfinch today .

If I can keep getting the odd few shots like this I'll be quite happy.

I let the battery run down today. An empty battery warning came up on the screen, the camera stopped functioning and then the lens retracted and the camera shut down.
Is the zoom quiet in videos? My SH-50 is quiet, my 2-year-old SZ-30MR makes a whirring sound.
Not sure, I have only taken one video, I could not hear any motor noise but it was windy. I will try it again when I get the chance.
Is there custom WB? On the SH-50 the two custom WB settings work still after WB AUTO has given up.
There are two custom WB settings, although I have not used them.

The red dot sight is great. Not quite sure what you mean about the hardware/firmware.

Hope this helps

Hi,

These are the best images Ive seen from the Olympus. I like the colors and sharpness. It seems to do well in good light conditions, not so well in low light.

Cheers

Steve.

Thanks Steve

I'm quite happy with the results I'm getting. I won't use it for much else other than birding as Landscapes at wide angle seem to be very poor mushy detail, and every thing else up to 600mm my Fuji XS1 does a whole lot better.

Excellent. I have memories of walking home with the C-750UZ lens open, because I had lost track of the charge state in my spare batteries (Eneloops came later).
Not sure, I have only taken one video, I could not hear any motor noise but it was windy. I will try it again when I get the chance.
Strong wind does mask the zoom noise a bit on my SZ-30MR. But the whirring sound reduces the volume of the recorded wind.
There are two custom WB settings, although I have not used them.

That suggests no old firmware is being recycled in the SP-100EE.

The red dot sight is great. Not quite sure what you mean about the hardware/firmware.
The Stylus 1 has been reported of dying with the lens open, and the custom exposure settings have to be re-entered from scratch, since the saved custom entries cannot be edited. Both these features were found in my C-750UZ bought in 2003.

The Stylus 1 zoom makes a whirring sound as demonstrated by CC, also heard on my SZ-30MR from 2011.

Your answers do show that no old crud is being dished up again with the SP-100EE. It is tempting.
