Yes, that's what I've been doing for a long time. A separate drive seems to be immune from the attentions of install programs. My data drive hibernates when it hasn't been used for a while, and there's a second or so delay while it winds up when you're looking for a file. Seems to me that also helps to keep malicious software at bay.
