I have 8x35 and 10x50.  Use the 10x50 most.  Best binoculars I have ever used and they were cheap when I bought them 30 years ago.  The 10x50 is the highest power I could enjoy unstabilized.  They are pretty big, though.  Also, any stronger than 10x50 and I would have trouble finding the (bird) in the field of view.  No problem with larger things, though.  I think those extremely expensive binoculars are overkill.  My standard test for decent binoculars is to resolve 4 of the moons of Jupiter on a clear night.  Too bad you can't try before you buy -- or maybe you can?
