Loosely means the subject appears lifesize or larger on the sensor.

I recently got the 12-40 and am thrilled with it. The closeup capability is a big plus.  I really appreciate it - maybe not true macro but good enough for most of my purchases.  Never had the 12-50.

I really miss that closeup capability on the Pansonic 35-100.  Wish it had the macro range of the Canon 300 f/4L IS.


I wasn't very thrilled by the 12-50 macro capability. Never got any macro shots sharp. The 12-40 is much better in this respect. And in all others if course (except for size and weight).
