The 55-300mm should be good enough. Set ISO to 100 which will preserve detail if you want to crop a bit later. I use manual with setting effects on. Set aperture at about f/8 or f/11 (whatever is low enough to still get you a sharp image. For shutter speed use at least 1/100. The moon is moving so think of it as a really slow action shot. At 300mm it'll only take about 15-20 minutes to move from one side of the frame to the other.
