Hi Daryl - can you shed some light as to why the need to use plenty of negative exposure compensation?

Because the camera will want to meter to 18% gray and you blacks will appear washed out. Can do it in post processing from RAW but better to have about 1.5 stops negative compensation dialled in at the time (depends on scene).
