This is exactly how I feel as well!! It's a standard feature on Canon for even the cheapest models. I don't understand why Nikon doesn't have it... especially on expensive models. I'm guessing it's some sort of patent issue.

I'd love to know what the differences are from d800's LV and Canons typical LV?

There is quite a lot around the web on this. Fred Miranda did a comparison a while back. Here is a video which shows it quite well.
