Sorry I'm not going to answer your question directly, but that's because I've been in a very similar situation to you in choosing a camera for my wife.

She used to get so upset that the quality of photos from the cameras I used (at the time was Pentax K100D, Samsung GX-10 and Samsung NX100) were so much better than hers (a old Kodak 4mp point and shoot camera). She had also tried my Panasonic TZ7 for a whle but said it was too slow to respond when she wanted to get photos of something moving.

I therefore went and got another NX100 and added the 50-200mm lens so she would have the range she wanted and had got used to from the TZ7.

You know what - she's used that NX100 about twice. All the rest of the time she still uses the TZ7 because even though I setup the NX100 on full auto everything she couldn't get on with having to manually zoom and still couldn't get the quality of photos she expected the camera to produce.

I did try and explain that getting quality photos was not just about the camera....

I now have the NX1100 and so in part my answer to you original question is that it really can produce some excellent quality photos, but I don't use the Kit lens - I mainly use the 16mm F2.4 and the 30mm F2 which in my opinion are better than all the other lenses I have on my other DSLR type cameras and at a fraction of the price. But I just can't imagine a typical point and shoot user getting on with fixed focal length lenses.

If your father is just going to use it as a point and shoot - is he also going to shoot JPEG? as he really won't get the best out of the Samsung NX cameras if he is.

Me - if I were to choose another camera for someone who wants auto everything - I reckon I would go for the newly announced Panasonic TZ60 which now also does RAW and has a bulit-in EVF to avoid problems with sunlit live-view screens. I'm sure it can't match the quality of APS-C RAW files from the like of the NX range, but I'm sure it would get used.
