On the D800, while in Live View

Thanks... I'm not quite convinced they all have this issue but it probably wouldn't surprise me if they did. The only way I will know I guess since I can't get experienced answers is to find the cameras in the physical world and try them out for myself.

Canon makes cameras but they don't have the dynamic range or noise performance that Nikon does. Sadly, I'd switch because live view is that important to me. I'll wait for some more answers on this from people who own different cameras.

you can use the OK button to toggle between a couple of different displays. If you can find this or a similar button on your D600, you'll be well on your way. One of those aforementioned displays has an exposure bar. This is what I use. Also, when I move the focusing box, the exposure changes as it moves over a light or dark place. The exposure changes when I change the aperture.

Excerpt from the D800 manual:

Exposure Preview

During live view photography, you can

press [the OK button] to preview the effects of shutter

speed, aperture, and ISO sensitivity on

exposure. Exposure can be adjusted by

±5 EV (0130), although only values

between –3 and +3 EV are reflected in the

preview display. Note that the preview may

not accurately reflect the final results when flash lighting is used,

Active D-Lighting (0174), High Dynamic Range (HDR; 0176), or

bracketing is in effect, A (auto) is selected for the Picture Control

Contrast parameter (0166), or p is selected for shutter speed.

If the subject is very bright or very dark, the exposure indicators will

flash to warn that the preview may not accurately reflect exposure.

Exposure preview is not available when A is selected for

shutter speed.
