That's the problem - it's a great tablet OS, but a poor desktop OS.

It's not an either/or type of thing. It's a great tablet OS and a very good desktop OS. Just because something has been retooled to work better with touch than it did before, doesn't mean it necessarily has detracted from mouse/keyboard use.

It has detracted from keyboard/mouse use because of how often it drags you back into the touch-optimized environment. It's not a balanced system, it's a system that keeps pushing you to use the touch interface. That's why people hate it. If MS would just let desktop users live happily in their desktop environment then Windows 8 wouldn't have gotten the bad rap that it has.

Again, you insist on "touch optimized". I would say that "touch improved" is the better term ...

It's "touch improved" for the user of a touch-enabled device, not for a desktop user with a large screen and mouse. Large tiles are easy to tap with your finger on a touch device...

I can fit almost 100 tiles at a time on my Start Screen if I choose to do so. That they are more spread out instead of mashed together in some never ending, tiny list, makes them much easier to select with a mouse.

You're making the same mistake as Microsoft did. You're happy with the interface (lucky you!), but you're blind to the problems that other people are having with it. Exhorting people to use the system the way you do won't solve anything. They want to use it they way they prefer, not the way you prefer.

The problem with the OS isn't the people who are using it. I agree that it's fundamentally a very good OS. The problems are cosmetic. But it's annoying a lot of people and that's bad news for Microsoft and everyone else who wants Windows to succeed (including myself, believe it or not).

On the plus side, it's looking like the next version may finally put Humpty back together again.
