For one thing, it can get someone who doesn't want a DSLR to buy an interchangeable lens camera.

Although the number of people who buy DSLRs is is still way ahead of those that buy mirrorless and probably will be all the while Canon and Nikon can use economies of scale to sell 600Ds and multi-lens packages for low prices. The competition from Mirrorless seems all to be at the top and middle end with little, other than end of life sales at the lower end.

It can also attract attention from those who assume good photography requires something bigger than necessary.

That doesn't sound to me to be a measurable variation.
