For me, one of the biggest benefits of the G15/16 over the G12 is the fast lens, f/1.8 at the wide end and still a fast f/2.8 at the long end. Let me be very clear in stating that I really liked my G12 and I still think it's a wonderful camera.

We still have a G11 that takes outstanding photos and is a great camera to use (for that matter, I'm also enjoying shooting an A650 IS.). The G16, however, along with its faster lens has a few other new tricks like much faster AF, burst rate, much improved buffer, and AF tracking at over 5fps. I also like some of the harder-to-see features such as the 'Nostalgia' setting now having more adjustments including high grain and high contrast black and white, which I actually use quite a bit.

As I mentioned before, the HDR on the G12 is nice but requires putting the camera on a tripod whereas the G16 allows you to handhold and use HDR. Even better though, it seems that the algorithms for the Shadow Correct and DR Correct have been improved to the point of not needing to use the HDR as much in situations where I'd have used it before. These are all also improvements over the G15 as well.

There's more, such as being able to keep the shutter open for up to 250 seconds for very long exposures, as well as time lapse movies, if you're into that sort of thing. The question becomes how much these features mean to you and some of them are definitely features I will make use of, while others will probably never see use.

None of this means that the other cameras are lesser cameras at all, but just that the G16 offers a few more tools for your photographic tool-belt if you want them. A good photographer can make a camera with far fewer bells and whistles shine--just look at BrianJ's incredible photos he recently took with his new 330 HS in that thread--so these features certainly aren't required to make a camera good. But they're nice to have if you want them. These are just a few of the reasons I chose to buy a G16

Andy i appreciate your in-depth thoughts, but i wish you would use paragraphs, its so hard trying to read all that.

There you go much easier to read.

Thank you, Alan, and sorry. I really was raised better than that!
