polarizing filter - how to set it ?

I have a polarizing filter and there are many times where it is not obvious to know when the effect is maximum.

I don't know if it is easier to see differences with an EVF or OVF, but this is frequently difficult to see this with my EVF (Fuji x-e1).

I tried manual exposure. I also tried to detect the differences thanks to the histogram, but when it is handheld, this is difficult to detect when the image is darkened.

I know that I should see a noticeable difference. There are times where it is not so obvious to view it. It is easier to see it when the filter is not on fixed on the lens, but when I fix it, I can not set set it at the correct position, there is no mark..

Which method do you recommend to set the polarizing filter at the best position ?

Thanks for your help,
