It's the most practical/compatible definition of 4k

The 4k name is misleading. And especially confusing when you consider the older standards are named based on their vertical resolution. And as the Wikipedia article states up front, it refers to horizontal resolution on the order of 4k.

But consider: 1080 / 9 = 120 * 16 = 1920

1080 * 2 = 2160 (double the vertical resolution)

1920 * 2 = 3840

So to preserve square pixels at 16:9 aspect ratio, this is the most likely resolution for 4k. Going to higher resolution doesn't scale so conveniently down to 1080, and going to increased horizontal resolution would require non-square pixels, which are a pain, and isn't done very often for equipment targeted to both stills and video.
