Excellent shots, Nate. Perhaps you would appreciate a few comments about pheasant biology. I have studied pheasants and have often written about them. The date of your shots was recorded by the camera, but you can date them almost as precisely by the condition of the wattle around the face. Notice how it is engorged and how it stands out from the rooster's face. That identifies it as an early spring rooster. In days to come, that red area will swell up more and stick out even more than it does here.

It is virtually impossible to get shots like this at other times of the year. In spring, roosters put themselves on display to attract a harem of hens. This guy could have had a girlfriend lurking in the weeds, or maybe he just hoped to attract one. He decided to tolerate you and your long lens because he was hoping to get lucky. Thanks again for the great images.
