New firmware for NX1000...

Just noticed it tonight as looking around the Samsung support site.

It was released on April 2, 2014.

I installed it and haven't noticed anything different except for one thing possibly...I say possibly because I simply may have not noticed this display option before.

It now appears as though there is a nice digital level, it works in both the landscape an portrait orientations and it nicely implemented.

I believe the level has always been there by pressing the display button (up)

Updated firmware to version 1.15. Was hoping for focus peaking and/or off center focus peaking. But it is still not there.

Will wait for version 1.16 for one of those feature at least.

Thought I would see if there was also an upgrade for the NX1100. There is but interesting that the NX1100 Firmware upgrade uses the same file as the NX1000.

Would have been helpful if there was a bug fix/feature list for the upgrade.

Won't bother trying it until I know what it fixes (or stops working!)

it is technically the same camera. The name change is just to accomodate the swap in RAW converter packaged.

Not quite in that it outputs RAW files using "NX1100" as camera model and this causes some RAW processors do not process the files even though they may process NX1000 files!

It may also be there to differentiate because of the QC issues with the NX1000 and dry joints causing Lens connection and WiFi failure

That's exactly what i've thought without reading this post here - that v1.15 will upgrade the body to support the latest 16-50 Powerzoom lens, which could be bought separately, or for instance with the new NX3000. I'm way disappointed, that the new NX3000 body is not an all-metal body design, even it does look it that way, with faux leather around. Too bad, it's just ordinary plastic, just like the Fujifilm X-A1 and X-M1 bodies. Anyway, the Upgrade went fine onto my NX1000.

Yeah, it is all plastic. Like you say, pretty much identical construction quality to Fuji X-A1 or X-M1. You have to consider price though, it is a cheap camera and will probably get much cheaper as time goes on so metal would be prohibitive. If you want metal build you will have to pay for it.

I am hoping mythical NX1 will be mag alloy ;)

Hi Eric,

that's the point - the price. ;) You get what you pay for, besides that - what i've read so far, the NX Mini is made out of metal, instead of plastic like the NX3000, with wrapped around faux leather. ;-)

We can only speculate about the NX1, but i just think 28 MP on APS-C x1.5 Cropsize Sensor is simply something too much...in terms of Megapixels.

I just bought the NX1100, which is all plastic, and it has a very solid, satisfying feel in my hands. Plastics have come a long way since Bakelite was invented.

yeah, my NX1000 is also alright. ;) The NX1100 is basically the same, just with LR4 for free added. The Firmware for both NX1000/NX1100 is the same, too. I can't say the haptics is top notch, but it's okay..from my NX1000. A Mag- Alloy body feels different.

But if a camera is made of magnesium alloy, does it really feel different? Isn't there some kind of skin or coating on the metal? Or are you talking about the way the weight is distributed?

I agree that the optics could be a little better; but for the $290 I paid, I'm satisfied. This is my first camera with a large sensor and a removable lens.

Great value. It's a good sensor and accurate AF. There's a lot less accomplisihed cameras for more money out there than the NX1000.

Generally metal cased cameras tend to feel warmer in my experience. For a recent example, I got a Nikon 1 camera as a gift for my mother, and it got positively hot during significant use due to good heat conduction. Putting a body-fitting leather case on it made it a lot nicer to hold--cooler (and more grippy). Overall I like the feel of metal surfaces, so I'm happy my NX300M has a metal top to touch periodically and non-metal wrapped sides for good grip and less heat. Speaking of X-A1: I think they are ergonomically quite nice and don't feel very plasticky once the battery is in. But the metal X-E1 is a lot nicer in tactile feel to me, and it has the non-metal fake leather wrap for some insulation.

It would feel sth better, heavier, more robust...and also wouldn't make noise when you would pick it up doughty.

yes, it's not bad for the price, especially a bargain with the included 20-50mm Kitlens. i like my NX1000, if only the lens would have 16mm at the wide end (not powerzoom!) and the NX1000 would include a at least 1.44MP EVF, then it'll be perfect. photo composition without OVF/EVF is a bad thing.

Hi everyone I have an NX1000 and it has worked fine for a couple of years running 1.14 of the firmware. However when I did the upgrade to 1.15 the update failed and now I have very limited access to my camera. I can only change the mode by taking the battery out and then changing the mode and then putting the battery back in. It still takes pictures but I cannot enter the camera menu or play back pictures I have taken. If anyone can offer any assistance I would really appreciate it as Samsung support have been useless and wont provide any help.

On a slightly separate note. Does anyone know what cameras the Samsung lenes are compatible with as I am so disappointed with support I have received from Samsung that I will probably change cameras.

Samsung lenses use the NX mount (or the mini NX mount in some cases), which is unique and specific to Samsung. Any lens you want to put on the NX1000 or any other Samsung ILC has to be an NX mount lens (only Samsung lenses have autofocus), or you can get an adapter. If you do end up using any non-Samsung NX lens or an adapter, you'll only be able to shoot in manual mode, so be aware of that.

As far as your firmware issue is concerned, I hope you haven't somehow bricked the camera. You could try going into the menus to see if there's a reset option somewhere to clear all settings and return to defaults. You could also try reflashing the firmware. The NX1000 is a pretty "old" model now.
