Re: Is the Canon 70-200 2.8L IS sharp wide open?

Thank you all for your opinions!  I'm happy to hear that I can still get good equipment as a hobbyist on a budget:). I see all the comparisons to the latest and greatest but then step back and ask myself if I'm going to notice a $1000 difference in everyday/practical use.

I was looking at the IS version not for moving toddlers as I know it will not help with motion blur but because I was concerned with hand holding a lens that heavy in some odd positions (laying in ground, leaning over playground equipment, etc).  Does that seem logical or will it not make much of a difference?

Finally one of the responses suggested the new Tamron 70-200.  Does anyone have advice to help me choose between the Canon MkI or a new Tamron?  The Tamron is appealing as it would be new with a 6 year warranty but I've always wanted an L series lens (not a good reason I know).  I'm not able to try the Canon before purchasing and I've never used L series glass before so I really have no idea how they match up.

Thanks so much to everyone for your input, I really appreciate the advice!
