What Price should the New A7s 12mp Camera be?

$2800 probably

Yowza. That much? Is 4k THAT much of a big deal? I realize it's better resolution, but unless you have a 4k monitor, what's the point?

We all go on about how most folks don't need high mpx sensors. How is this different for the non-pro consumer?

If they're introducing it at NAB, it's aimed more at the professional market. I'd expect it's competition to be the Canon C100 (Super 35 format) @$5K, and the Panasonic GH4 (M43 format) @ $3300, including interface unit.

Well the gh4 is 1800.00 but It's not full frame. The a7s will probably not be a pro codec but is full frame. So I'm guessing a little more than the a7 but lower than a7r. I say 2000.00. They can't go much higher than a gh4 and can't charge more than a 36mp full frame camera for a 12mp...

again, this will not be pro codec or raw video so it's not a canon 1d c competitor.

Forgive a dumb question, but can you get 4k out of a 12mp sensor? Don't you need 4000 pixels on the short side?

UHD (4K) is 3840x2160, DCI is 4096x2160 so 12mp is plenty. Some have gone back and renamed 1080p as 2K video but then UHD is 4x the size.

4K is in the long direction. Rumors point to it being a consumer format 4K which is 3840 x 2160 pixels.

The GH4 is actually $1,700, and has a built-in customer base. It wouldn't surprise me if Sony prices the A7S aggressively so it is around that price. Remember that if you don't already have the lenses, you've got to add that to the cost, which makes it considerably more expensive than Sony consumer 4K camcorder.

I agree it should be between A7 and A7r at most. Geex, you can get smart phones now with 4K video so I can't see too many dropping a lot of money on it unless its very affordable. It may even be cheaper than an A7.

As a stills camera it may be inferior to A7 so that would have to be taken into account.

I wonder if it can do many fps with fast AF and be super low light efficient which could undermine Nikn D4s and Canon IDX.

The wedding photograher market may find it appealing as well.

You are seriously comparing this offering to cell phone 4K?

Custom chip optimized for video. Also, Sony is probably unsure whether it will have wider appear for photographers as well.

Overpriced.

Wait a month for $500 off.

Wait a year for $1000 off.

Typical for the most camera companies today.

Id gladly take 12MP for stills if the IQ is outstanding. I have no interest in high MP cameras that take a longer time to process and take up disk space :-)

Its a new sensor rathet than an older sensor used in a new shell, so that might affect price. Sony CX900 and AX100 are $500 apart for the same camera but one with 4K.

I would suggest more than the A7 and probably close or a little more than the A7R, but it somewhat depends on a bunch of other unknowns.

It is probably fairly safe to assume that it will be around the A7R with the A7 as a 'base' model and the R and S as two different specialty models for different markets. Not much is different between any of them, the processing, design and software will all be very similar, but the sensor is different (and things that go along with the different sensors, like PDAF and EFCS and burst rates etc). The rest of the 'core' of the camera will be basically the same hardware.

However there 'may' be the need for extra thermal dissipation etc, which may further add to the cost of the A7S, but my suspicion is that that is more in the sensor design and cost.

The price really depends on the details. If we are talking high bitrate 10 bit 4:2:2, they can ask more than the A7r. In fact, they should ask more in that they will be highly discounting the camera in six months. If it is a 60Mb/sec, highly compressed 4K, then they can keep the camera if they are asking a high price.
