Canon announces REAL camera in surprise press release!

There has been a lot of debate lately about Canon's place in the market. We have had the malcontents on one side whining about the dated Canon sensors with industry trailing DR and lower MP count. On the other side there have been the Canon Fanboys claiming the numbers on a spec sheet are meaningless and it is all about the "system".

Well, it looks like the engineers at Canon have been ignoring both of them and have just been designing cameras instead.

The new REAL camera (Radar Augmented And Laser) will put all of the arguing to bed. The new system uses radar to calculate the focusing distance and is said to be faster and more accurate than traditional DSLR focus sensors. Focusing point can be chosen in live view by touch or with a rear joystick. There is also an OVF with electronic overlays that can select the focusing point by tracking your eye movement or by use of the joystick.

The focus point size and position is not limited in any way. Spot focus is assisted by a weak laser to assure the radar will lock onto the correct spot. Menu choices include face, eye, and bird recognition focus modes. In auto mode the multiple faces focus recognition will adjust aperture to ensure everyone is in focus. Canon is also claiming that you can lock on to an eye (of a person, animal, or BIF) and the tracking feature will stay on it until you change the focus point.

Focus peaking, histogram, exposure preview, etc.. are all available in live view and through overlays with the OVF. Full overlay mode changes the OVF to an EVF. Switching from viewfinder to live view does not affect frame rate. The technology allowing an OVF without a mirror is a carefully protected trade secret.

The initial release will include two models which both come with EF adapters:

  1. The REAL One, sized between the M and SL1 with a 24 MP APS-C sensor, it uses the EF-M mount and coincides with the release of the EF-M 17-55 2.8 IS and the EF-M 70-200 F4 IS. Portrait, macro and zoom primes will be coming soon. 8 FPS with 12 shot raw buffer.
  2. The REAL Two, A shallower version of the 6D body is a full frame camera with a 38 MP sensor. The focusing menu is similar to the 1D series with added features. The new EF-F mount (short flange full frame) debuts with 16-35 2.8, 24-70 2.8, and 70-200 2.8, and more to follow in the coming months. Generous trade-in allowance at Canon Direct is available for equivalent EF mount lenses purchased within the past year. 8 FPS with 20 shot raw buffer

With their purchase of Sony's camera division and comprehensive patents on their REAL technology, Canon is claiming that all other camera manufacturers will be out of business by the end of 2014.;-)
