Why Pentax lenses have small front elements?

Of course not all of them, but I have several lenses with 49mm filter rings while I can't recall any 49mm filter rings on any Canikon lenses. What are the gain and loss of small front elements except  compactness? I remember a rough equation between FL and max aperture for front element diameter but it seems not to be the case in most modern lenses anymore.
