I agree with you that absolute sharpness is not necessary when balanced by the smaller form factor. I have plenty of images taken with my X-E1 and 18mm where I simply otherwise wouldn't have taken it because a) I was waving around a camera with an obviously protruding lens (the zoom) and attracting unwanted attention b) the whole package was a lot lighter and I actually felt like taking the camera in the first place.

I don't agree that they should have made the 23 differently, by all accounts it's a fantastic optical formula - sharp in the centre but smooth outer regions when defocused at wide apertures, before sharpening across the frame when you stop down. Perfect for both detailed landscapes and artistic shots. If I had money I would be throwing it at Fuji for one right now.
