Re: Is the A58 now the entry level SLT?

You keep saying this, but the indications of Sony keeping the A mount in anything but the premium range of cameras and lenses (if that) is not as certain to me as it is in your statements.  Also, what Sony is doing now with all of it's emphasis on the E mount line is making their position as to A mount much less secure than it was in previous years.

Use some perspective. E-mount offers Sony an easier approach to expand. Even with slow AF, E-mount cameras have become popular for their own strengths NOT as a full replacement.

Sony never had the luxury of that with A-mount. In fact, Minolta did not either. A "me too" approach will not work for A-mount. It needs a revolutionary update that Sony started with SLT. It still has ways to go but now dependent on further developments of the sensor (focal plane AF and tracking). It would be stupid to launch repetitive products annualy and lose money in the process. That would be sure way to kill A-mount.

Sony is restructuring and the time is right for it. Product development takes time and even more so with most of this time spent on economic times that have been horrible. In fact, Sony tookover A-mount in 2006 when economic slow down had just begun.

But, you may be right in assuming that cheap A-mount body may not be anymore. Sony is likely to focus on mid and upper level cameras on A-mount, which likely means, 5-series is potentially the entry point instead of 3.

But then, Sony is doing this with E-mount as well. Eventhough a3000/3500 is cheap, it does not replace NEX-3 series. The a5000 is the new entry level body that is above NEX-3N.

And while A-mounters complain about Sony not doing anything since a65/77 have been around for 2+ years, remember, NEX-7 owners are too.
