Can I make an image of the HDD on a fresh HDD so if the original HDD fries, I can just swap out the pristine Imaged drive for the fried one & start anew?

You /can/ do that, but what I would do is first hook it to the internet and do all the Microsoft updates. Then install all your "gotta have" software and your device drivers. Then clone the drive. Windows 7 currently takes about 1 Gb of patches and updates.

Yup that would be the route I planned on...

You could alternately image the drive, which would allow you to make images "out of the box", updated, and configured. All of those images would probably fit on any drive you could buy.

I'm not sure I follow that...

The only issue with this "system" is that supposedly drives can go bad sitting on the shelf. I've never experienced this myself, but I've read about it here, so who knows.

Doesn't surprise me... If that's common, I guess all my pics prior to '06' that are on apre-sata Hdd from the machine before the one I'm currently on & am soon replacing might be lost, since that pre-sata drive hasn't been touched in nearly a decade...

Having said that... Hell, what's the diff if it goes bad empty or cloned, either way it'll be the odd man out, since I have 2 other drives. One I plan to add to the new machine's single empty drive bay & the other in an external HDD case..

This Sony I'm on now has 3 Hdd's in it & still has an open bay for another.. I'm just trying to find something to do with them all... I never did fill them like I thought I might back then.. My shooting has dwindled considerably or I might have...

Oh, and my Dells have all come with factory restore discs. One for the OS, one for the drivers, and one or more for any software you bought.

I can only hope... There were no discs in any of the pics of the unit & I thought I read in a review that none came in the box nor were any discs listed in the What's-In-The-Box description, if there was one...
