The fact is that Nikon took a very long time to recognize the D600 dust / oil problem. It is troubling that the 2 useful statements that Nikon has made regarding the D600 defect coincide :

  • The first with threats of class action suits
  • The 2nd after a protest by China's media and officials

Hi Thierry,

Keep in mind that long before either of those two, Nikon was dealing with folks kindly already. They were taking the cameras in and changing out shutters while providing free shipping etc. And many were already getting full, no questions asked refunds - the whole amount that was paid for the kit lens, camera etc.

I don't excuse their handling of it overall - but I can say that I've not read of an instance where they treated a person poorly over their camera's dust/oil spots.

What I find the most appalling is that they know full well what the issue is and we all suspect what it is, but they won't say. I think the reason is that this same flaw was scheduled to be placed into other cameras including the Df and they don't want us to jump to conclusions. I know that's a bold statement, but I think this issue is a massive iceberg waiting to be revealed...
