The lens flange distance has Nikon and Canon locked into reflex mirror cameras for the time being, and lenses, not camera bodies, are where the profits are.  Keeping with their current practice of upgrading lenses via IS mechanisms allows for continued sales of newer, profitable lenses.  Only if and when either company shifts away from reflex mirror cameras, and starts building a whole new family of lenses to go along with the shorter flange distances will we likely see a jump over to IBIS from them.
