Photographers often do refer to the ability of large diffusers to cause light to "wrap around" a subject, thus causing soft transitions from light to shadow on the subject as well as softer cast shadows.

Of course, light is not really "wrapping" (bending) around the subject, but is the effect of light coming to the subject from multiple angles, not just a point source. But, the term "wrapping" is nicely descriptive and works to explain the effect.
