Panorama Mode

So, as a very new LF1 owner, how useful is the "Panorama" mode? I've played with it briefly, and it looks good in camera, but how does that translate into an actual usable photo for printing?

What are the limits of use for the resultant photos?

I'm assuming higher quality would be obtained from taking a more traditional panorama series and stitching them together in post. Is it a substantial difference?

At first it struck me as "gimmick, through and through", but it does appear to be a very quick and easy way to get a decent result.

I would appreciate hearing about your experience with this feature.
